Needing motivating to train when climbing solo?
So we all find times when we are training solo and ever feel you are lacking that motivation well, Coach Kyle may be able to help.
We all climb for various reasons but we all share that intrinsic desire to reach the top of the route be that in bouldering, trad, sports etc.
I often climb alone in the bouldering Center. This comes with a plethora of positives and negatives, one of them being motivation.
My main source of motivation is my love of the sport but like everything, this love fluctuates. One week I want to climb every second of every day the other, I just want to be at home being a glutinous slob.
To keep my motivation high pre and during my climbing sessions I use various tactics and approaches:
Watching people send hard on youtube or watching your favourite vlogs. For me this gets me wanting to get in the gym and push my self and pull as hard as the pros. Having climbing on your mind really helps me keep that drive high.
When climbing solo I put in my headphones, put on a playlist that really gets me going and climb away. I use tracks that match the climb I’m about to attempt. If I was trying a really hard powerful project I would play something that really gets me going, whereas if it was a more technical problem I would play something that enhances my concentration. It’s as if music and movement become one.
Keep it loose:
Attempting the same project or style of the climb can get repetitive, especially if you’re not making any progress. Yes, there are arguments that say work your weakness, but don’t only focus on this, you love slab, go do some slab, love dynos, go find a dyno.
Climbing doesn’t always have to be hard or maximal effort. Find a happy medium (pardon the pun).
